Celebrating Your Christmas in Paris - Things to Do

Paris is called the City of Lights due to the bright, stunning bulbs that adorn the city streets and tourist spots every night. This Christmas, make sure to see the light show for yourself by visiting two key landmarks: L'Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower.

You should visit the Arc de Triomphe near the Champs Elysées especially at night to see the Arc de Triumph in its bright, fully-lit glory.

The tradition of beautifying every city block, lamp, and infrastructure with light bulbs came into practice in 1828, when Paris officials affixed hundreds of gas lamps on the Arc de Triomphe to make it stand out from other monumental buildings in Paris at the time. Back then, it was unusual for an infrastructure to glow at night, save for sidewalk lamps. Paris later became popular for the lights that blanketed the city and offered a dazzling view in the evening until it became known far and wide, as the "City of Lights".

A drive around the Champs Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe is not enough to experience a truly French Christmas. To complete your Parisian celebration, make your way to the 7th Arrondissement to see the Eiffel Tower in full glow during the first 10 minutes of every hour at night. It's an interesting treat for the eyes, especially if you have never seen so many light bulbs simultaneously turn on and off.

You may also get the chance to see the Eiffel Tower up close if you managed to secure the tickets for it. Unfortunately, tickets are now sold out, so you will just have to do by taking pictures from afar.

Christmas Market Destinations in Paris

Christmas Markets may be likened to that of a flea market, but in Paris, Christmas Markets are grander and more exciting with chalets, stores and stalls offering freebies and high discount rates on their merchandise. It has become quite a tradition for Parisians to drop by Christmas Markets to pick up last-minute gifts for themselves or for friends back home, and if you're in Paris this December, don't forget to add the Christmas Markets to your list of things to do.

When visiting a Christmas Market.

  • Take note that it will be crowded during Christmas Market openings or peak days so unless you like crowds, it may be a smart idea to visit them earlier than everybody else. This way, you get to see the Christmas markets for yourself and perhaps do a little shopping without having to mix into the busy mob.

  • Keep an eye on your things at all times. Since most markets are crowded with chalets and stores, the merchandise on display may easily grab your attention. That being said, make sure to hold on to your valuables.

  • There are many Christmas Markets scattered across Paris, so if you are not satisfied with one of them, there are more for you to visit. Never give up on your search for the right market! Good deals and discounts are being offered everywhere and you definitely wouldn't want to miss out on that.

Special Christmas Gifts You Can Find Only in Paris!

Whether you're building a wish list or picking up a few gifts here and there for your friends back home, don't forget to drop by the markets in Paris to pick up these trinkets you can find only in Paris.

We all want to give the best gifts this Christmas, as after all, the season comes but once a year. To help you with your search for the perfect gift that stands out, here are our ideas:

Take your kids or spouse on a helicopter tour around Paris or Versailles

Take a look at the City of Lights from another angle-the sky! For a good 35 minutes, you get to gaze upon the historical city of Paris aboard a helicopter. This service by Airshow gives you a tour around Paris and you get to see the beautiful aspects of Paris from the sky.

There is a limit of 7 passengers for every round. Adults must pay a few of 169 EUR, while childrenss' rates are at 155 EUR per head.

Soar the skies on a hot air balloon!

If you don't like helicopters, you might enjoy the slow ascent to the sky on a hot air balloon. Le Ballon Air de Paris lets you see the entire Parisian plane on a hot air balloon 150 meters off the ground. The hot air balloon ride is open from 9 AM until the evening and accommodates adults at a Holiday price of 12 EUR per head, teenagers at a holiday price of 10 EUR per head, and children at 6 EUR during weekends and Holidays.

Le Bon Marche - "The First Department Store in the World"

Since many of us get our necessities from the department store, a trip to Le Bon Marche may also be a good idea for gift shopping. Le Bon Marche is not just an ordinary store, by the way; it has been hailed over the years as "the First Department Store in the World" and is often treated by visitors like a tourist spot.

There's so much you can find in Le Bon Marché such as imported items, perfumes, bags, and other stylish pieces. Le Bon Marché may also be the perfect place to find 100% French made goodies such as bags, shoes, clothing, and other treats.
