Paris in the Colder Months

Paris lives up to its name as the "City of Light" more so during fall and winter, when mornings are shorter and nights are longer. By dusk, Paris' ornate lamps are simultaneously switched-on to illuminate the damp, cobbled streets while the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and Place Vendôme stand in fully-lit glory to mark the change in season. It may be cold and balmy in Paris, but the activities and festivals lined up for visitors assure you of a warm welcome.

Arguably, Paris is more beautiful at night than at daytime. For the next few months, mornings will be cloudy and often accompanied with a bit of rainfall. It's not the best time for hitting the parks since the leaves will have fallen and the flowers will have wilt, but it is the perfect time to visit museums and art exhibits and dine in more obscure café and pâtisseries.

This season, Paris' must-see exhibits in popular museums are a mix of music and Impressionism. The largest and most memorable exhibitions in Paris are often held at the end of the year; Parisians, themselves, are strong believers in saving the best events for last.

Season's Highlights...

"The Chat Noir: Art and Pleasures in Montmartre", a live, avant-garde musical event that commemorates the controversial beginnings of Le Chat Noir, the first artistic cabaret performance in Paris which opened in 1881. Over 200 works related to the Chat Noir with contributions by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edouard Vuillard, and Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen, along with other artists, will be presented for public appreciation.

"Dali", a major exhibition of rare, known and unknown creations by world-renowned surrealist painter, Salvador Dali. See Dali's best and rarely seen creations or introduce your young ones to the world of art starting with this exhibit.

"Art in War Time", a major event held in a lesser known museum; it is an exhibition of more recent artwork created by French artists trapped behind enemy lines, internment camps, foxholes and front lines during WWII. Around 300 works of art created between 1938-1947 by over 80 artists will be put under the spotlight in Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. "Art in War Time" is proof that even in France's darkest times, art continued to shine on.

Outdoor Activities

If your trip falls closer to the Christmas Holidays and New Year's Celebration, revelry and fireworks will count as the city's main attractions.

Treat yourself or your kids to a Ferris Wheel ride at Place de la Concorde overlooking Avenue des Champs-Élysées. The towering white Ferris wheel is hard to miss and will only cost more or less €5 for a ride. If you or your young ones are afraid of heights, make your way to Hotel de Ville and have fun with other kids at the outdoor skating rink. Rent for a pair of ice skates is at €5-10*.

Afterwards, skip down to any of these cozy French restaurants to enjoy a hearty meal...

Les Galopins at 24 Rue des Taillandiers, 11eme is a cozy, little restaurant located in the République district. Due to its size and proximity to other romantic landmarks, Les Galopins is the perfect place where you can find privacy, a good view and good food. They serve authentic French bistro meals and while the place can get busy (it's a hit among locals and tourists alike), the staff are known to provide unmatched service and will take care of you.

Le Temps Des Cerises at 31 Rue de la Cerisaie, 4eme is another interesting bistro where you can enjoy light lunches with a French flair. Named after a song and situated between the Marais and the Seine, you won't find a more-"French" environment than here.

For pastry-lovers, Pain de Sucre at 14 rue Rambuteau, 3eme is where you can find delicious cakes, pastries and other sweet creations that look as good as they taste. Some of their bestsellers include giant marshmallows and gluten-free cakes.

Odds and Ends

When Le Bon Marché first opened in the 1850's in Paris, the world's first department store not only brought fashion closer to men and women, it also introduced a new lifestyle. Le Bon Marché was known for selling different valuable merchandise, especially frocks and suits at affordable prices, making it possible for men and women to improve their wardrobe as long as they could afford it. This proved beneficial to middle-class men and women who were now capable of dressing like richer folks courtesy of Le Bon Marché's exceptional deals. In fact, Le Bon Marché is French for "the good deal" or "the good buy".

Through Le Bon Marché, France's shopping culture was born and Paris' shopping districts are one of the many reasons why tourists flock to the French capital every so often. Aside from Le Bon Marché, smaller bazaars and boutiques by French designers open their doors to shoppers to sell their finest merchandise at exceptional prices. Occurring only twice a year, the Soldes is the perfect time to experience and appreciate Paris' lively shopping environment.

Stores around Paris and in participating fairs

Look out for the "Soldes" (Sales) or "Promotion" (Deals) banner on windows and walls. To make the most out of your shopping excursion, make your way to high-end boutiques at Saint Germain des Pres, Le Marais and Palais Royal to get the best deals on designer clothing.

Visit Brussels

Paris and Brussels are somewhat polar opposites: while Paris is known as the fashion capital of Europe, Brussels has long been hailed as the gourmet capital. While Paris has the Eiffel Tower as its main highlight, the Atomium is Brussels' architectural pride. Those who want to see an entirely different side of Europe after visiting Paris should definitely see Brussels, next.

Located just 1 and 1/2 hours away from the French capital, Brussels is home to Belgian chocolate, delicious wines and spirits and other landmarks such as the Atomium which stands as a salute to science and Mini-Europe, a small replica of the entire European continent.

Start your trip in the city-center, Grand Place, which is surrounded by guildhalls and the city's town hall that features pre-Renaissance era exterior. The Grand Place is one of Europe's oldest market centers and was first developed in the early 10th century, long before Paris (or Lutetia, as it had been called) was built.

As you walk around the city, keep your eyes open for "Easter eggs" (or hidden iconic landmarks) such as the Manneken Pis, his "sister", the Jeanneke Pis, and their "pet", the Zinneke Pis. All three statues are not hard to find but due to their size, many tourists tend to miss them.

Other activities waiting for you in Brussels include:

The Chocolate Tours

Belgian chocolate was introduced to the world by none other than Belgian chocolatiers, most of whom are based in Brussels. Chocolate tours are held regularly to introduce tourists to authentic Belgian chocolate creations and other gourmet recipes. There is also a workshop after the chocolate tour so you can experience preparing Belgian chocolate and other chocolate-stuffed pastries.

Brussels Beer Tasting Tours

With 800 (more or less) varieties of beers to offer, you can never go wrong when you visit Brussels for beer tasting events. Discover Brussels' best spirits and enjoy a drink at the city's iconic cafés when you join the Brussels Beer and Wine Tasting tour. Find out how Belgian hops are made and what makes Belgian beers special compared to other mass-produced alcohol.

With Brussels as your starting point, you can reach nearby cities such as Spa, Ghent, Antwerp, and Brugges by train in an hour or nearby capitals like Amsterdam and Luxembourg in two. For those who enjoy road trips, there are other out-of-town tours which will suit you and your travel itineraries perfectly.
