Welcome 2 France Newsletter September 2013
Hello !

September, in Paris, is a month of rediscovery and the best time for you to get to know Paris' history at the European Heritage Days, her art, theatre, and music scene at the Autumn Festival, and her winemaking past and authentic French cuisine in Montmartre. This month also brings a promise of better weather, street fanfare, and the quaint ambiance Paris has to offer. The weather may be cooler this month, but in Paris, it is definitely not going to be a "sleepy" season!

Celebrating Europe: What to Expect at the European Heritage Days 2013

Aside from dining at French cafes and joining educational group tours, the European Heritage Days is also a good time to familiarize oneself with the amazing culture France has to offer and experience Europe's interesting history hands-on. How you choose to celebrate this truly European festival depends on your preferences. Participants for Journees du Patrimoine will include major and minor museums across Ile-de-France, a number of public establishments, parks, gardens, heritage sites and other attractions in and around Paris.

To help you plan your travel itinerary over the course of the two-day festival, there is a helpful tool in the European Heritage Days 2013 website that allows you to search for free and paid, educational and cultural events in the city. You can also find events held in other provinces around France using the targeted search tool found here.

For your autumn trip, we recommend these unusual ways to getting to know Paris:

Tassinarri and Chatel at 10 rue du Mail, 75002
Let silk woven creations tell you the tale of France's history at the Showroom of Tassinarri and Chatel. Trace France's history through the intricate display of fine, silken masterpieces at the guided tour. The tour is open on both dates of the festival, starting at 10:00 AM. www.tassinari-chatel.com
Museum of Ferdinand de Lesseps and the Suez Canal in 1 rue d'Astorg, 75008
The Museum of Ferdinand de Lesseps and the Suez Canal celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, coinciding with the European Heritage Days 2013. Aside from the exhibit, a workshop for kids and adults will also be held at the museum. www.associationlesseps.org
Villa des Arts in 15, rue Moreau Hégésippe, 75018
Get to know Montmartre starting with Villa des Arts, or literally, the village of the artists. This interesting village is where Paris' most artistic minds live, and make their living.

Harvesting Experiences: Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival

Although there are no commercial vineyards left in Montmartre, the tradition to celebrate the district's winemaking past lives on through the annual Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival. This year's theme, "L'amour", focuses on Montmartre's love for good food and fine wine. The festival is family-friendly and will also include workshops for adults, teens and children.

Montmartre was once a winemaking village covered by acres and acres of vines and other facilities to create Pinot Noir, Gamay and other wines. At one point, the caretakers of Montmartre were mostly Benedectine monks who were highly skilled in winemaking. But as the city of Paris grew larger and consumed portions of Montmartre, the enormous vineyard that once existed here was cut down and removed to make way for property development.

The wine may be out of Montmartre, but the tradition remains, as evidenced by the yearly Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival. Taste different brands and blends of wine at the event or join the wine auction held on the last day of the event.

Dining Around Montmartre

Despite being the site of an annual vintage car race and home of the stunning Sacre Coeur chapel, the 18th district is still, unfortunately, one of the most underrated districts in Paris. It's distance from the city center, where tourists and Francophiles are known to frolic about is both a boon and bane for this historically-rich area: it gets little love from tourists but being far from the common tourist route also makes it the ideal, quiet rendezvous to get away from Paris' busy-ness.

The buildings in and around the 18th district do not meet central Paris' Renaissance flair but what the 18th may lack in view, it makes up for with its traditional restaurants and cafes. As they say, the fastest way to the heart is through the stomach; the 18th district tugs at the heartstrings with the vast selection of cafes and wine bars in the area.

Cafe d'Albert 117 Rue Ordener, 75018
Rustic, French ambiance and a great selection of wines dominate the interior of this gem located along the intersection of rue Ordener and rue Lapeyrère. Traditional French cuisine infused with Italian influence are served daily for lunch and dinner. For a most memorable visit, do so during a theme night. www.cafe-albert.com
Au Pied du Sacré Coeur 85 Rue Lamarck, 75018
Rated 4.5 stars out of 5 on Zagat, Au Pied du Sacré Coeur is a cozy restaurant near Sacre Coeur and within view of the steps of Montmartre. The restaurant is a hit among the natives and a must-see, must-dine for tourists who want to experience and taste authentic French dining.
L'Etoile de Montmarte 26, rue Duhesme, 75018
Looking for light, French meals? L'Etoile de Montmarte is a small cafe along rue Duhesme which is known for its coziness and delicious, French cooking. It's hard to miss the all-red exterior which screams comfy, small-town French ambiance from afar. Come for the coffee, wine, or the street view. www.etoile-montmartre.com
Lui l'insolent 15 rue Caulaincourt, 75018
A course starts at € 25 with wine, which is almost a steal in this side of town. They serve traditional French cuisine but from time to time, new combinations might appear on the menu. For a better experience, visit Lui l'insolent for dinner.
