Welcome 2 France Newsletter November 2013
Hello !

Low season does not always translate to boring season; not in the liveliest and most visited capital in the world, at least. Winter season may not be the ideal time for walking around, but it is no reason to stay cooped up in your posh apartment either. Take this opportunity to venture beyond the usual sights and sounds in Paris. See the "outskirts", celebrate the holidays Parisian-style, or if you are feeling adventurous, make your way to Brussels and Cannes to welcome the new year.

Featured Apartments

Louvre - Rivoli - G01389

A small, posh studio for two, our Louvre - Rivoli is the perfect choice for tourists who want to stay within the heart of the city. The apartment's small size inspires guests to drop their luggage and spend more time outside, to discover the beauty of Paris. Quiet and intimate, this studio is equipped with a portable kitchen with which you can prepare light meals.

Marais - Ecouffes - G04517

This 25-square meter apartment located on the 1st floor of a Hausmann building in the Marais district is perfect for guests who are in Paris for business, but those visiting for leisure will also appreciate the studio's minimalistic features. Despite the studio's size, it is equipped with 1 full bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen that comes with cooking utilities.

Saint Lazare - Sansboeuf - G08561

The Saint Lazare - Sansboeuf apartment reflects the high-end, luxury living of the 8th district. This 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom pied-a-terre is equipped with a complete kitchen, a full bathroom, and entertainment and cooking appliances that makes for a more convenient stay. Ideal for spring- and summer-rentals, the apartment has a terrace and centralized air-conditioning.

Venturing into the "Outskirts"
Avid visitors to Paris highly recommend staying in the heart of the city, somewhere within the 1st to 9th districts, but what do you do when apartments in these areas are all fully booked?

During high season, of which Christmas and New Year's fall under, it is more difficult to find posh apartments within the inner districts than it is all year round. Larger, more equipped apartments that often come with historical value are mostly fully booked on these dates, making it almost difficult for last-minute visitors to land an ideal apartment in an ideal address.

Booking early, usually at least 6 months in advance, is a common way to beat the rush, but there is never a guarantee to finding the ideal apartment even when you have booked months ahead. When your options have all run out in the inner districts, the tendency is to look outward.

The 10th to 18th arrondissements are not necessarily outskirts but being far from the tourist path, staying in these districts means having to take the metro or renting a Velib to get to tourist attractions. Still, distance should never be a hindrance to discovering and experiencing Paris. There are plenty of ways to make your stay in Paris memorable regardless of your apartment's not-so-ideal location.

Get to see more of Paris. Staying far from the city proper means you need to do a lot of walking-- and sightseeing! The usual tourist path stretches from the 1st district, where the Louvre is found, to the 9th district, where you can find the famed Paris Opera, but limiting your trip to these districts means not being able to see the lesser-known, quaint and unusual museums and attractions in the other 11 districts.
And by quaint, we mean...

Visit Musee du Fumeur or the Smoking Museum in the 11th. Exhibits here include tobacco products, different smoking paraphernalia from all over the world, and portraits of smoking from France to Egypt to Cuba. www.museedufumeur.net
See the Cirque d'hiver or literally, the Winter Circus along rue des Filles Calvaires and rue Amelot. This is a popular location for fashion shows, dressage exhibitions and other artistic displays. www.cirquedhiver.com
Though not as obscure as the other districts, the 14th district is where you can find the skyscraper, Tour Montparnasse. There is a rooftop terrace here from where you can see the rest of the city. Our Montparnasse apartment is located just 9 minutes away.
Musée Bourdelle in the 15th district houses sculptures and art by Antoine Bourdelle. There are over 500 works of art in the museum today, with some creations by other French sculptors. www.bourdelle.paris.fr/en
Though not a place of interest within the 17th district, you can reach Arc de Triomphe by foot with rue des Renaudes, 75017 as your starting point. Our apartment, Ternes - Renaudes is just a mere 15-18-minute walk from the attraction.
The 18th district is home to up to 5 popular churches and, amusingly enough, the famed Moulin Rouge in 82 Boulevard de Clichy; our Montmartre studio is a 15-minute walk from the "Red Mill". www.moulinrouge.fr

Stay in a newly renovated apartment. Staying in an apartment with rustic features can make you feel as though you've gone back in time (and what a nice feeling that is when you are visiting a historical city!), but if your preferences lean towards newer, modern buildings, well, you'll have plenty of options to choose from in the 17th or 18 districts. Look for a section of Paris with post-war buildings; chances are you'll find yourself an apartment here with modern features.

See the quieter side of Paris. The other 11 districts of Paris are quieter. for native Parisians. They are quiet in a way that you can seldom find tourists, like yourself, hiking around with a map of the city. Little interaction with tourists can be a good thing if you want to see Paris' humbler, calmer side, away from the inner district fanfare.

Everything is just a metro ride away. Paris' unusual form, a snail's shell spiraling outwards, means that no matter how far your district is from the heart of the city, you can go from point A to point B within minutes thanks to the city's reliable metro system.

Staying in the `outskirts' isn't so bad, after all.

The Comforts of Winter: Seasonal Food in Paris
Celebrate the Holidays or the turn of the year with some seasonal French cuisine.

Winter food in Paris mainly consists of French cuisine, most of which are served all year round: foie gras, escargots, sausages, vin chaud-- basically anything that reminds you of France's vast gastronomical choices will headline every menu du jour across the city this season. If you want to celebrate Christmas Day, or New Year's the way locals do, get your fix at these tourist favorites.

Where to Find Vin Chaud in Paris
Toast the winter chills away with vin chaud, or hot mulled wine, which is, interestingly enough, a hit across Europe during the Holidays.

You can make your own hot mulled wine at home with some cheap red wine and a few other spices, but if concocting different ingredients is not your forte, there are plenty of cafes in Paris that serve this seasonal "delicacy".

A hit among locals and tourists alike, Cafe Hugo sits on a beautiful spot that overlooks Place des Vosges. Have a chat over some vin chaud and perhaps, tarte tatin.

Café Hugo -- 22 Place des Vosges, 75004

Return to la Belle Epoque when you walk into Le Square Trousseau, a jewel in the 12th arrondissement. They serve vin chaud in champagne glasses, adding to the ambiance.

Le Square Trousseau -- 1 Rue Antoine Vollon, 75012

The helpful bilingual staff of No Stress makes ordering a breeze. It may not be the ideal destination for a full meal, but they do serve delicious vin chaud.

Summer Soldes 2014 and Rétromobile Exposition
Old tastes and new fashion collide next year at the annual Summer Soldes and Rétromobile Exposition.

The upcoming Salon Retromobile will include a special exhibit of rare Alpine vehicles, mostly racing and road automobiles manufactured from 1963 to 1978, along with a brief presentation of Jean Rédélé's life and racing exploits. For history buffs, Retromobile 2014 will not leave you with just vintage cars to admire: the exposition will, for the first time, include vehicles and machinery from World War I.

Pre-sale tickets are priced at €14, while regular tickets are at €16.

The Summer Soldes, on the other hand, marks the start of Paris' summer season, but it's not just locals who will be flocking to Paris' busy shopping districts next June. The Summer Soldes has become the perfect alibi for shopaholics to see Paris at least one a year, with many hoping to snag a deal on luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Christian Louboutin, and many others.
