Planning Your Christmas Tour Around the Capital
The season's highlights in Paris include the famed Christmas markets which open in various, districts across the city.

It's amazing how Paris easily transforms from a busy metropolis into a winter wonderland during the Holidays. Christmas markets, for one, have made the transition more convincing. The Christmas Markets are a must-visit, no matter how many times you've been to Paris. Here, you can find goodies from valleys outside Paris and vineyards outside France. If you venture far enough to the stalls where exotic merchandise are sold, you can even find strange, new delicacies, pre-loved luxury bags, second-hand furnishings, and other souvenirs.

Even if you have no plans to shop, come anyway for the experience.

Three of the largest Christmas Markets you should visit, this winter, are in La Defense, Champs Elysees, and Trocadero. Take note, they are the busiest markets too. Around 12 large markets will open in Paris, so if you find the markets in the 8th, 16th, and La Defense too crowded, you have other options to consider.

The La Défense Christmas Market opens by late November and closes on the 28th of December. It's hard to miss the market situated here: just make your way to the Grand Arche until you find the vendors' stalls. If you've had enough of the window shopping, there is a nearby skating rink.

Located just 8 minutes (by metro) from La Défense is the Christmas Market of Champs-Elysees. If there is any Christmas Market you shouldn't miss, this would be it. Vendors from within and outside France will set up shop here, so if you are looking for rare wines and exotic food, schedule a trip to Champs Elysees right after La Defense (or see Champs Elysees first).

No trip is complete without a visit to the Eiffel tower. If your first visit to Paris is during the wintertime, you're in luck: the grounds near the Eiffel Tower, in the Trocadero Gardens, become the site of another hugely popular Christmas market and the European Christmas Village. Visit Trocadero starting on the 12th of December to see a "snow village", flea market, and an ice skating rink all in one spot.

Alas, even good things must come to an end: the Champs Elysees and Trocadero markets close on the 5th of January, 2014.

French Souvenirs that are Easy to Ship
Take a piece of Paris with you by shopping for French-made souvenirs.

Whether you seek a belated gift for a friend, a simple token for family back home, or a small souvenir for yourself to remember Paris by, the City of Light has a wide array of souvenir shops which you can visit for a Holiday gift-hunting. Larger department stores in Paris like Grand Lafayette, La Printemps, and other establishments carry souvenirs, but the merchandise found here are mostly mass produced and can be found almost anywhere. If what you are looking for, specifically, is a unique souvenir that screams "I had a great time in Paris!", schedule a trip down some of Paris' souvenir boutiques.

Finding a gift can be tricky especially if you know very little about the receiver or if his/her interests change as quickly as her/his mood. In this case, play it safe with timeless picks, like rare French make-up, chocolates, and French delicacies. Going for pocket-sized, or smaller gifts, may be a wiser choice as well, so you can ship your souvenir from one country to another with ease.

For women, the souvenir of choice have always been make-up and skin care products, the reason being is that French brands are easier and cheaper to buy in Paris than across the pond.

For friends who can't stand acne breakouts, you can never go wrong with French brands like La Roche Posay which are quite expensive and difficult to find in some cities in the States and outside Europe. Another brand you can easily find in Europe but not in the United States (and other territories) is Bioderma.

There are a number of pharmacies across Paris that sell make-up and skin care product affordably, but if you seek a wider variety to choose from, you could try Le Printemps.

Food is another classic souvenir, one that you can hand out to friends and family of all ages. For this trip, skip Duty Free and try patisseries that sell baked goodies, or better yet, candies. Le Bonbon au Palais, for example, is a great destination for French sweets. One interesting thing about this shop is that it is designed like a school room, complete with seats and a writing board.

For your more sophisticated pals, nothing beats the wide selection of tea concoctions from Mariage Frères, one of the oldest shops in Paris. You can visit Mariage Frères to try their tea, learn how to put different flavors together, or simply, grab a few souvenirs.

Challenge Your Taste Buds
Fusion is in fashion this season in Paris.

You can find packed meals and delicacies in the Christmas Markets but nothing beats the dining experience in these fusion restaurants.

Mystery Cuisine
37 bis rue Montpensier, 75001

A Vietnamese-fusion restaurant, Mystery Cuisine has been hailed as one of the best bistros in the 1st district. Aside from serving an exotic menu, their wine selections are as varied.

Restaurant Akrame
19, rue Lauriston, 75016

A small restaurant in the 16th, Restaurant Akrame may not look as grandiose as other restaurants in this side of the city, but it has received a Michelin star for their superb menu.

Le Festin Nu
10 rue de la Fontaine du But, 75018

BBC once covered an article about Le Festin Nu's unusual menu: insect tapas and other exotic blends. If you're brave enough to try insects on a plate, it's Le Festin Nu for you.

No Reservations

Christmas Day and New Year's Eve are both busy dates in Paris. If you haven't made your reservations ahead of time, you might not be able to find a seat in some of the more popular restaurants, but this is not something you should worry about, either. Some cafes and restaurants will be open but will serve guests on first come, first serve basis.

Les Cocottes
135 rue Saint Dominique, 75007

They tend to whip out their best menu at dinnertime but coming much for lunch would be a good idea too. This is a fairly popular restaurant so there is a possibility it will be packed by Christmas Day.

Au Clocher de Montmartre
10 rue Lamarck, 75018

Known for their Comté ravioli and vegetarian menu, Au Clocher de Montmartre is a French bistro situated not too far from Sacre Coeur. They require reservations for Christmas Eve dinner, but will seat you if you come early.
