There is more to Paris than just fashion, good food, intricately-designed buildings, and towering monuments. The tourist path often advertised tends to leave out Paris' more historical destinations: ones that show what Paris was before the glitz and glamour made it to the streets. This year, consider taking a different approach to discovering Paris: start with the city's medieval past and slowly move forward into fashionable modernity.

Paris, the Roman Fort
Dig back into the past to see Paris before the Hausmann Renovations.

Before Paris became the most visited capital in the world, it was a Roman Fort that went by the name Lutetia, an ancient Celtic word that means "marsh". Getting to know Paris before it was Paris is a crucial step to understanding the city's history. You can still see a bit of Lutetia when you visit Musée de Cluny, but if excavations and digging interest you, travel back in time when you visit La Crypte Archéologique.

La Crypte Archéologique is one of the lesser known Roman-era excavation sites in the city that gives visitors a peek back to three different time periods: you can still find traces of street shops and cellars here from the medieval era, the cornerstones of Eglise Ste-Geneviève-des-Ardens from the 18th century as well as structures from the early 19th-century.

Paris, the City of Light
Although known for other things, the city's oldest nickname has always been "La Ville-Lumière" or the City of Light.

The phrase "City of Light" holds literal and figurative significance for Paris. During the Age of Reason, Paris became the center for learning in France, if not Western Europe. The Latin Quarter, for example, is one of Paris' oldest and best traces of its enlightened past, but you can also find a wide variety of educational exhibits in Palais de la Découverte and Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie. Both museums give visitors a peek into the natural world and scientific phenomena.

Paris, the Fashion Capital
Paris' is known for many things, but one of its most memorable titles would have to be being the Fashion Capital of the World.

Like the Seine, fashion lives and runs through the veins of Paris. Luxury brands like Chanel, Balenciaga, and Dior are often credited for placing Paris on the map as a fashion capital, but style and sophistication have always existed in this former-Roman settlement with exhibits in Musée Galliera in the 16th arrondissement showing this.

Browse through the Roman and modern French jewelry and dresses here, as you would a timeline. The museum is dedicated to housing Paris' most valuable fashion pieces including frocks, art and ornaments originally belonging to French royalty. If fashion interests you, the Musée Galliera must be your first stop.

While Champs Elysees in the 8th has often been hailed as the fashion avenue of the city, there are smaller shops situated across Paris that offer Chanel-inspired fashion at a fraction. The nearby 9th district is home to a 100% Parisian-made venture: Le Sept-Cinq. Owned and managed by two former schoolmates, the boutique sells apparel and accessories carefully- and lovingly-made by French designers and artisans.

But fashion in Paris is not limited to clothes or jewelry; Parisians dress their homes as creatively as they do their bodies. Sentou, a 100% Parisian concept interior design store, is where you can find unique innovations by the late designer Robert Sentou. Kitsch items like lava lamps and disco lights to unique crockery and cutlery are found here.

The best time to discover Paris, the Fashion Capital would be during the months of January and February through the Annual Soldes. Occurring only twice a year, the Soldes is the best opportunity to get your hands on luxury brands and French designs at a discount. The winter sales kick off on 8 January 2014 and end on 12 February 2014.

Paris, the Culinary Powerhouse
With 118 Michelin stars, Paris holds the record for having the most number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe.

The gastronomical selections in Paris are varied as they are plentiful. From the 1st district to the outer skirts of Paris, you can find patisseries, cafes, bars, bistro, and fine dining restaurants that serve authentic French, as well as, exotic and fusion cuisine. Needless to say, getting to know Paris' diverse history is much easier through dining.

Le Balm in 6 rue de Valois Paris, 75001

A hidden jewel tucked neatly along the Louvre, this French-Thai fusion restaurant boasts a cool and trendy atmosphere and a wide selection of exotic cuisine. The interior of the restaurant is practical, even minimalist by French-bistro standards, but the servings are far from minimal.

Le Coupe Chou in 11 Rue de Lanneau, 75005

Located along the Latin Quartier, Le Coupe Chou serves classical French cuisine from inside a 16th century home. The furnishings are antiquated but grand, while the dishes range from the usual French cuisine to delicious gourmet options.

La Charlotte de l'Isle in 24 Rue Saint-Louis en l'Île, 75004

Dining or enjoying a cup of coffee al fresco is always possible in Paris. There are plenty of rooftop restaurants here as well as restaurants with open dining terraces, just like La Charlotte de l'Isle. Cozy up with a friend or your significant other with a view of ile Saint-Louis from the restaurant.

Au P'tit Troquet in 28 Rue de l'Exposition, 75007

No matter how many times you have been to Paris, seeing the Eiffel Tower and having a cup of coffee nearby will never be cliche. If anything, it is seen as something very classical, very French. When in town, make Au P'tit Troquet, located nearby, your next cozy rendezvous for afternoon or seasonal meals.

La Closerie des Lilas in 171 Boulevard du Montparnasse, 75006

If you are fond of Ernest Hemingway, the name of this bar and bistro might ring a bell. His 1926 novel, "The Sun Also Rises", was written right here, in one of the comfy seats, amidst the restaurant's stunning interior, probably while sipping on white wine.

Paris, the City of Love
There's no doubt about it: the Parisian skyline is the perfect backdrop for a romantic walk or an al fresco date.

As you now probably know, French designers and architects take style and substance very seriously. From Hausmann buildings, to parks and bridges, French artistry includes making innovative and picture-perfect structures that tell a romantic story.

Surprisingly, one of the most romantic, commonly-photographed, and most visited destinations in the city is surprisingly, not a monument, but a bridge. Pont Alexandre III, which connects the Left and Right banks to Ile de la Cite, stands witness to millions of marriage proposals, first dates, and intimate walks. While the intricate features of the bridge is credited for exuding a romantic ambiance, the Seine that stands in the background also adds to the mystique.

If Pont Alexandre III is perfect for old-school expressions of love, Pont des Arts, located on the opposite side of the city, is ideal for kitsch dates. In the Louvre side of Pont des Arts, you can find thousands, if not millions of padlocks planted there by modern-day romantics.
