Welcome 2 France Newsletter April 2014
Hello !

One of the greatest art movements to have sprung out of France was the Age of French Impressionism. Although Impressionism aimed to capture the emotions and scenes of day-to-day living, most Impressionist works of art also captured the raw beauty of nature. With spring (and soon, summer!) in full bloom in Paris, capture these seasons' finest scenes when you take a day trip to the parks that line the city or book a table in Paris' charming bistros.

Why We Love Spring, as Explained by Science
Are we naturally programmed to love spring?

Spring is appealing for plenty of reasons: the blooming flowers, the birds in flight, cool breeze, and sunny skies are capable of turning the loneliest of frowns into the brightest of smiles, but according to science, there are biological and natural reasons why people love, and tend to fall in love during spring.

The human body's response to the colors, sounds, and scents that occur during spring is often very positive. Whenever we encounter novel experiences like hearing the soft chirping of birds, seeing vibrant flora blossom beautifully in parks and gardens, or simply feeling the soft breeze graze our against skin, our brain expresses its approval by producing more of the "happy chemical", which neuroscientists lovingly call dopamine.

Dopamine is responsible for a lot of positive emotions. It makes you feel happier, more energetic, and more optimistic about the future. Dopamine plays a role in making you more outgoing and more expressive; and during spring, where nature is at its most beautiful state, one feels as if the conditions are perfect for meeting people and making friends. For some, the spring environment even looks perfect for falling in love. You can totally see your relationships last forever, thanks to dopamine's beautiful effects.

Fortunately, dopamine is not just produced during spring or spring-like conditions, but the environment does help in its active production. There are plenty of ways to trigger dopamine production; the most common steps include eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and tyrosine (which your body needs to produce dopamine), by living a healthy, active lifestyle, and by having a more positive outlook towards life.

However, like all chemicals, our body's production of dopamine has its limits. When our body slows down on dopamine production, our response towards things we used to enjoy also changes. Later on, we tend to become uninterested, slow, and sometimes, indifferent. Losing interest is a natural response which our body makes, but it could also be adverse side effects of stress and depression.

Dopamine definitely plays a role in making you feel more enthusiastic about day-to-day affairs, but your body's response to old and new experiences is also affected by your attitude towards life. Being optimistic whether it is spring or not and being open to new things and ideas is the only surefire way to retain your interest in newly-picked up hobbies and new found friends. Live life as if everything is constantly blooming and blossoming, and you will live in permanent spring.

But whether the effects of spring are backed by science or simply perpetuated by common social behavior, there's no denying it is one of the most beautiful seasons for traveling, learning new things, meeting new people, and enjoying life, in general.

Finding Inspiration in Paris' Nature Scenes
Impressionist painters found their inspiration in France's rural environment. Find yours within Paris.

If you are thinking about picking up a new hobby this season, or if you have been trying your hand at painting or poetry, find inspiration for your next masterpiece by visiting these beautiful, yet not necessarily obscure, landmarks located within, and a few kilometers outside of, Paris.

Highest Peak in Paris - Parc de Belleville

If you find Paris too busy, you don't need to head for the outskirts to escape the city noise (although that would also make for an interesting excursion). Parc de Belleville, the highest peak in Paris, serves as your alternative escape. Reaching the peak of the park will give you a commanding view of the French capital below. Further rejuvenate your senses at Parc de Belleville when you visit Maison de l'Air, a museum dedicated to clean air and a clean environment.

If you can't visit Parc de Belleville this season, try again in September so you can participate in the annual Concours des Décorations Florales Estivales, a floral decoration competition.

Minimalism in Nature - Musée Albert-Kahn

The Japanese gardens at Musée Albert-Kahn feature oriental designs, which you may enjoy if you are looking for a place in Paris that is not busy with intricate columns, Hausmann-era architecture, or almost-realistic statues and grand art installations. Aside from the garden, you can also find inspiration in the colored photographs exhibited within the museum and which were taken at a time when most photos were in black and white.

Autochromes in Musée Albert-Kahn feature day-to-day scenes from the Balkans, Americas, Far East, Indochina, Middle East, and Africa.

Impressionist Art from Private Collections

Getting the chance to see some privately owned paintings by the greatest French artists is a rare opportunity, even in Paris where museums and art galleries are aplenty. This season and until 6 July 2014, visit the Marmottan Monet Museum (2 rue Louis Boilly, 75016) to take a peek at around 100 Impressionist art by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro and other French artists. Aside from paintings, art installations and sculptures will also be exhibited.

Admission prices to the even start at €5 and may go as high as €10. The exhibit is only open on Tuesdays to Wednesdays and Fridays to Sundays, and will officially end on 6 July 2014. You have until summer to find inspiration in popular Impressionist art.

Release Your Inner Artist

Finally, if you are ready to try your hand at art, be it painting, sewing, stitching, or knitting, you can find your art materials at:

La Droguerie in 9 - 11 rue du Jour, 75001
Sells sewing materials, accessories and craft kits. Books and patterns are also found in one end of the store.

Lil Weasel in 1 passage du Grand Cerf, 75002
Also known as a knitter's mecca in Paris, Lil Weasel is where you can find different yarns and textiles, all organized by color.

Pierre Huguet et Cie Ets in 36 Rue Réaumur, 75003
Sells art materials and paints, some of which are sold by box or bulk packages.

Traditional and Modern French Bistros

Complete your excursion with a bite from these traditional and modern French bistros that come complete with a wide selection of classical French menus.

La Tour de Montlhéry by Chez Denise
Come for the classic bistro experience and stay for the cuisine. This chic restaurant in the 1st arrondissement serves French selections and comfort food in a traditional Parisian environment.

Address: 5 rue des Prouvaires, 75001. Open on weekends only.

Saturne
More high-end than the usual bistro, Saturne introduces a wide variety of French traditional dishes that are sure to challenge, and appeal to, your palate.

Address: 17 rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, 75002

Les Papilles
Smaller than the usual restaurant, but twice as French; aside from the traditional cuisine, try their wide selection of French wine.

Address: 30 rue Gay Lussac, 75005. Open on Tuesdays to Saturdays only.

Breizh Café
Known for their crêpes, Breizh also serves vegan options, comfort food, and wine. The interior is lively, while its address is fashionably French.

Address: 109 rue Vieille du Temple, 75003. Open on Wednesdays to Sundays only.
