Welcome 2 France Newsletter June 2014
Hello !

Paris is beautiful in all four seasons, but summer definitely stands out as the best time to discover the streets, partake in French fanfare, and have a bite of French cuisine. The city literally undergoes a makeover every summer to accommodate more tourists who are visiting to witness Paris' beautiful sights and to give native Parisiens a new environment to bask in. If you're in town, don't miss this season's highlights.

Revival of the Iconic Piscine Molitor
Too humid? There's a Parisian landmark for that!

Long before Paris decided to put up artificial beaches along the banks of the Seine every summer, Parisians would head down to the 16th district for a cool dip. The 16th, which is known for its affluent neighborhood and stylish streets, was also home to one of the most luxurious indoor pools in Paris: Piscine Molitor.

Piscine Molitor, unlike other pools in Paris at that time, was not just a place where you could go to get away from the busy, humid city. Molitor was like a catwalk on its own, and every summer was like Paris fashion week all over again. Those who frequented Piscine Molitor were not just there to hide away from the summer's heat, they were there to get an even tan and model the latest swimwear design. Others say Piscine Molitor was the place to be if you wanted to be discovered by modeling scouts; or if you were a designer, you could show off your greatest designs right here in Piscine Molitor for all of Paris' richest residents to see.

Needless to say, Piscine Molitor became an iconic destination for fashion designers and fashion-forward folk. In 1946, the world's first bikini held its debut right here, by the Art-Deco poolside. But summer fashion wasn't just exhibited in Piscine Molitor. Those who sought fame and fortune would often find their big break here. In fact, Johnny Weissmuller of the Tarzan and Jane movie fame once worked here as a lifeguard.

Piscine Molitor became a haven for avid swimmers and tourists who wanted to spend their vacation in Paris' luxurious side. It was a different world on its own; unfortunately, the fantasyland that Piscine Molitor was didn't last forever: a housing controversy brought Piscine Molitor to its end. In 1989, the once iconic 50-meter indoor pool eventually closed its doors to Parisians and tourists alike, and stayed closed for almost 25 years.

By the late 90's, the once-fashionable indoor pool fell into disarray and became a haven for vandals, skateboarders, and local garage bands. The 33-meter pool became a raving pit and its art-deco interior became the modern canvas for graffiti artists. The empty pool hosted new kinds of trends and lifestyles-- just not the kind of lifestyle it was originally designed for.

But as they say, icons never die, they simply get a makeover. By 2002, SOS Molitor regained its ownership of the Parisian landmark and began its renovation shortly thereafter. By 2012, work on the complex neared its completion and by 2014, it was reopened to the public as part of a luxury hotel in the 16th district.

To keep with its reputation as one of Paris' most affluent indoor pools, an entire day's use of the pool at Piscine Molitor will set you back 180 Euros or you can join the pool club and get a decent discount on your daily pool usage.

For a luxurious dip, the Piscine Molitor indoor pool is at 4 Rue Nungesser et Coli, 75016.

Cool Destinations for Staying Cool in Paris

It's summer, the sun is out, and the weather is, for the first time in a long time, perfect for sightseeing. Crowds will be inevitable this month and with them, a rowdy, humid atmosphere you wouldn't want to be in the middle of. For a more memorable vacation, steer clear from the common tourist paths and find your way around Paris by visiting these cool landmarks.

Aside from Piscine Molitor and the Paris Plages that will line the Seine this July, you may also want to schedule a dip at these stylish indoor pools:

Piscine de Pontoise
19 rue de Pontoise,
75005 Paris

Piscine Suzanne Berlioux
Forum des Halles,
75001 Paris

A Bite of Paris
Paris is home to a wide variety of cuisine you wouldn't want to miss out on.

One of the most common tips travel guides will give you about dining in Paris is to keep your eye open for restaurants with their menus advertised in English. You can easily spot a restaurant aimed towards tourists just by looking at the menu because rarely do homegrown French restaurants and cafes advertise their menu in a language other than French.

While we're in the topic of menus and cafes, don't forget to familiarize yourself with French favorites. Aside from escargots, fondues and baguettes, you might also want to try raclette, pierrade, and tartiflette, all of which are served in most French restaurants.

Le Paradis du Fruit
23, bd. des Italiens, 75009

Le P'tit Bréguet
11 Rue Breguet, 75011

Fruit salads and ice cream are hot sellers (no pun intended) this season. If you are looking for a comfy salad palace, head down to Le Paradis du Fruit in 23, bd. des Italiens, 75009. Aside from milkshakes, ice cream, and fruit salads, this cozy restaurant also serves barbecues, kebabs, and other skewered delights. Le Paradis du Fruit also has branches in Chatelet, Bastille, and St. Michel.

If you are anywhere near Bastille, you may also want to visit Le P'tit Bréguet in 11 Rue Breguet, 75011. This chic bistro is known for serving Auvergne cuisine and a wide selection of beers, sausages, and wine. The place is often packed, but if you wait in line, the attendants would be more than happy to hand you a free beer.
