Planning for your Summer Trip to Paris

The heat of summer in Paris begins with the month of June and ends in August. With only three months of warm weather and bright sunny days, schedule your summer trip to Paris wisely.

Summer in Paris is high season and a time when deals and discounts are aplenty and tourists from all over are pouring in by the minute. If you haven't, check the biggest events in Paris this summer and make sure to register or get tickets early. If you plan to discover Paris' best restaurants, it is highly advisable to reserve a table as soon as you can.

"Table for two, please": Reserving a Table in French Restaurants »

Summer in Paris means you get to meet a lot of tourists: as you pack your luggage for your summer getaway, local Parisians will be preparing theirs to escape the humid temperature. You'll be surprised to meet more tourists on the streets than locals this month.

Summer in Paris is the perfect time to bring out the fashionista in you: the clothing of choice in Paris often includes neutral-colored coats and jackets and some flat and sturdy walking shoes, but this season, you're welcome to go all out. Wear your best summer chic garb, cool walking shorts, and a pair of hip walking shoes.

What to Wear: Summer in Paris »

Summer in Paris means warm mornings and cloudy afternoons, but the weather can be unpredictable and sometimes, cool breeze sets in followed by mild to strong rainfall. Even when in your summer's best, bring an umbrella along to shade you from both the sun and rain.

The best way to dodge weather blues is to keep track of the temperature and climate in the city. If you rely entirely on your smartphone to plan your trip, download weather apps like AccuWeather so you'll know what to wear and what to prepare as you wander around Paris.

Summer in Paris calls for sweets, pastries, and ice cream; and with hundreds, even thousands of sweet and pastry shops scattered all over town, you'll never run out of delicious ice cream flavors to try or cakes to slice. Whether you are with children or traveling alone, these iconic sweet parlors are a must-see and their delicious recipes, a must-try!

When it comes to luxury ice cream and delicious sweets, both Berthillon and A la Mère de Famille win the top spot for being two of Paris' best ice cream shops. The former is known for serving natural ice cream made with the finest ingredients. The latter, on the other hand, is known for being Paris' oldest ice cream shop. Founded in 1761, A la Mère de Famille boasts ice cream and sorbet creations of unusual flavors such as chocolate-mint and candied orange with vodka.

Souvenirs, Wines, and More

If you're visiting the City of Light for the 1st time, 2nd time, or the Nth time, there's no reason why you shouldn't bring a piece of Paris home with you. You've probably heard about the art shops located along the Marais district or the small grocery stores located along rue Montorgueil but if you're looking for something unusual, out of the ordinary, and truly Parisian, make your way to any of these less tourist-y' sections of Paris:

Sennelier at 3 Quai Voltaire, Paris 75007
Paris' oldest art supply store, Sennelier sells colors and crayons of all kinds and sizes. Its esteemed clients include Picasso, Van Gogh, and many others.

Caves Auge at 116, Boulevard Hausmann, Paris 75008
Paris' oldest wine shop is where you can find natural wines and drinks of different flavors, kinds, and mix. You might not find much during your summer visit but if you return to Paris by fall, Caves Auge will be stocked with France's best wines.

Dehillerin at 18-20 rue Coquillière, Paris 75001
Paris' oldest kitchenware shop is where you can find every kitchenware imaginable. From casseroles to knives to chopping boards, Dehillerin is the best place to get it.

G. Detout at 58, rue Tiquetonne, Paris 75002
Speaking of kitchens, G. Detout in rue Tiquetonne is a very unique store where you can find hard-to-find ingredients and cooking tools. Most pastry chefs in Paris go to this store before checking elsewhere. If it's not in G. Detout, then you won't find it anywhere.

Les Abeilles at 21 rue de la Butte aux Cailles, Paris 75013
Les Abeilles is not really a store, but it is a restaurant that serves honey-laced creations, from cakes, pies, to candies.

Paris Mythique at 43 Rue des Cinq Diamants, Paris 75013
This small shop sells unusual and rare souvenirs that are often found in the Butte aux Cailles neighborhood. You might find reproductions of popular paintings here, a few gaffes for design purposes, and handmade items.

Summer Highlights

Paris Plages 2012

The best way to make use of a 40º weather is to pack your bikinis and shorts and head for the beaches. The Paris Plages, which is held annually from mid July to August, is a major event among locals and is marked by beaches opening along the Seine. Watch out for beach umbrellas and recliners in this side of town: Louvre - Pont de Sully, Pont de la Gare, and Bassin de la Villette.

What to Expect:

Paris Plages begins on 20 July 2012 and ends on the last week of August, 2012. Private and public beaches will open along the Seine and will operate from 8:00 AM until midnight. Although entrance is free, tourists must take note that refreshment, food, and whatnots will be priced higher than usual because it is high season.

Activities we recommend:

- Go kayaking and canoeing for free at La Villette Beach. Learn how to kayak or canoe with friends at La Villette. A professional instructor will teach you the basics of the sport, free of charge.

- Join the smoothie-making workshops. Head down to Voie Georges Pompidou if you want to learn how to make smoothies for free. This activity is perfect for kids aged 5 to 12 years old. The first session starts at 10:00 to 1:00 PM daily while the second session starts at 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

- Not fond of swimming or getting your hands dirty? There are free concerts held around the beaches so check the Paris Plages site for the schedule.

Bastille Day in Paris

Bastille Day signifies the dawn of the French Revolution and the birth of the French Republic. On July 14, 1789, Parisian revolutionists seized control of Bastille, a desolate chateau used as a prison by the state. Taking control of Bastille simply meant taking control of the country, its government, and its fate.

What to Expect:

Bastille Day on 14 July 2012, Saturday, is a huge event in Paris marked by fireworks display, street shows, theater presentations, and other city-wide exhibitions. Traffic will be heavy because of the parades and imminent merrymaking on streets. Since it is a national holiday in Paris, major grocery stores and malls will be closed; however, green grocers and smaller markets will be open.

Activities we recommend:

- Join the party at Palace de la Bastille on 13 July 2012. It is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to dress up in their most French-inspired clothing.

- On 14 July 2012, wake up early and head down to Champs-Elysees to witness the Bastile Day 2012 parade. The annual Bastille Day parade is also known as Europe's oldest military parade.

Important Updates

If you are arriving in Paris by train, please leave Gare du Nord by the main entrance. Due to parking issues, we have decided to make the nearby McDonald's restaurant our meeting area. You can find the nearest McDonald's at the right side of Gare du Nord. As always, please keep an eye out for a small board with your name and the Welcome2France logo on it.

For all your mapping needs in Paris, we encourage you to use, the official website of the rail and transit company in Paris.
