Welcome 2 France Newsletter May 2013
Hello !

There's always a festival or two happening in Paris. If you can't find little flags or revelers in the city center, rest assured, you should find a small gathering of sorts in other districts. That's just how Paris is: it's lively, yet not too boisterous, and while the city seems reserved, it definitely knows how to acknowledge the little things that make life more enjoyable.

Featured Apartments

Marais - Rue de la Verrerie

This charming 1-bedroom apartment that sleeps up to 4 people is a very rare find in Paris. It is located in a very historical district while the apartment itself still retains some architectural effects from the 17th century, such as exposed wooden beams and an open wooden spiral staircase.

Luxembourg - Saint Jacques

The calm and rustic features of this 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment contradict the liveliness of Paris during the summer season, but if you seek an apartment that exudes a very distinct feel, the Latin Quarter is the ideal pick. Located in a 19th century building, our Luxembourg - Saint Jacques is perfect for up to 4 people.

More than Music

Where we're going, we won't need maps. You could even close your eyes and let your ears do the traveling as Paris celebrates a music-filled season. The French capital is not just home to art, fashion, or wine; in fact, events for the latter half of spring are proof that in Paris, adventure has a melodic counterpart.

Number one on our itinerary brings us to Saint Germain des Pres, the bustling community in the 6th arrondissement which serves as home to many of Paris' iconic cafes, patisseries, shops and boutiques. The district, which has gained fame over the years for its rich history, picturesque parks and squares, and tourist-friendly cafes and restaurants (most of which are Michelin-starred), transforms into a large and lively concert ground for Jazz musicians from all around France and abroad for two weeks starting on the last month of spring.

Festival Jazz à Saint-Germain-des-Prés

May 19 2013 to June 3 2013

But of course, the Saint Germain des Pres Jazz Festival is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire city will gear up in June, once more, for a larger musical event that aims to showcase musical talents and exhibitions from other genres. Fete de la Musique is a more open-genre event and will have a slew of hip-hop, pop and R n' B presenters, along with other artists.

The best part? It's open for all!

Open-Air or Covered Paths?

This season, the choice to dine al fresco (outside, with an open view) or shop through a covered path is in your hands. Although Paris has been called, for the nth time now, the world's most visited capital, there are still a few hidden gems rarely mentioned on travel guides (and which are for you, to discover).

A good view plus a good meal is what many call the recipe to a very memorable vacation; unfortunately, if you stick with the traditional travel itinerary, you will only find yourself in the same old restaurant destination or the same old rustic cafe, which affords you neither of the two.

If you've always wanted to enjoy brunch while enjoying a view of the Paris skyline (or the term, Paris rooftops would be more fitting), summertime would be the best season to do it. Under the right weather, La Terrasse, perched on top of Galeries Lafayette, makes for the perfect hideaway where you can take pictures of the busy city below while sipping coffee.

La Terrasse des Galeries Lafayette
40 Boulevard Haussmann
75009 Paris

The restaurant is only open during summer so if you happen to be in Paris around this time, take the opportunity to drop by and order something light. The highlight of this visit is not necessarily the food, but the view. Reservations are not necessary, but take note, there are only 60 seats at La Terrasse.

Exploring Paris' Historic Galleries

It shouldn't be a surprise that the world's most fashionable city has had a lively and stable network of enclosed malls and galleries long before it was the norm. Paris' covered passages were originally constructed to protect shoppers from unpredictable weather. Rain or shine, shoppers back in the day could rely on the intricate glass ceilings of the galleries for shelter.

Many passages have already been destroyed by the first and second world wars, but a few passages are still left standing today; dilapidated, but still standing and functional: Passage du Grand Cerf in 145 rue Saint-Denis, 75001, for example, is where you can find several souvenir shops, boutiques, as well as the workshop of renowned jewelers, Eric Semain and Lydie Chabot (of Eric et Lydie).

Most passages today are located far from the touristy routes, but time and again, many adventurous tourists have stumbled into a few of these covered galleries, like Cour du Bel Air in 56 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, 75012. Despite its location, Cour du Bel Air manages to command a loyal group of customers who have found comfort in the passage's quietness.

Passage-hunting is also, apparently, a hobby for many tourists. The mission? Find and pick up a souvenir from all surviving passages.
