Finding Your Ideal 'Hole in the Wall'

Paris is at its most idyllic state during summer, but this season also means long lines and long waits for many visitors who want to see the city's more popular destinations. If all your photographs from Paris contain at least 10 to 20 people walking into the shot, you know the city's more overcrowded than usual, but don't let the busyness discourage you from enjoying the city or making the most out of your trip.

It would be wise to schedule your day trips to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and other popular landmarks with the help of a tour guide or by joining a tour group for convenience. If you want to plan your own itinerary, purchasing tickets ahead of time and availing of the Paris Museum Pass are a must-do.

Although Paris commands more tourists than any other capital, there are still special districts and addresses around the city that seem hidden from, but not entirely insusceptible to, the street revelry. On certain days, if all you want to do is enjoy a simple chit-chat with friends and take in all the beautiful sights Paris has to offer, retreat to these almost-hidden a la carte cafes located in accessible addresses around the city.

40/60 Pizza in Teglia
44, rue Trousseau, 75011

The location is as interesting as the pizza in Le 40/60 Pizza in Teglia. The small cafe is known for serving budget, vegetarian pizzas which are prepared on-site and with fresh ingredients, but the cafe's solid black and white decor may not reflect this. We might just have the solution though: order your pizza to go and head down to Jardin Nomade, just a few minutes away.

Jardin Nomade is an open-for-all shared garden which residents around rue Trousseau maintain together. Kids, families, and individuals who prefer living a more eco-friendly way of life are Jardin Nomade's most frequent visitors, but visitors, like yourself, who need a calm refuge from the city's bustling and hustling, can enjoy your pizza here.

Bar le Passage in Senderens
9 Place de la Madeleine, 75008

If you're looking to treat yourself (or your companion) to a fancier restaurant, try Bar le Passage on the ground floor of Senderens Paris. It's an interesting restobar with lots of character, where wine is the alcohol of choice and the menu is never the same. As a gastronomic restaurant, it is where renowned Parisian chefs go to recreate recipes they have just invented. The moment you walk in, you are officially part of the gastronomic experiment.

Aside from the "surprise" menu and the vast selection of wines to choose from, Bar le Passsage is also open on Sundays.

Café Cambronne
5 Place Cambronne, 75015

It's never cliché to immerse yourself in Parisian culture and dine where Parisians tend to go, but during the high season, most popular Parisian destinations may be packed to the brim with tourists who have the same itinerary in mind. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for fancy and budgeted dining in the city but one must first learn the trick to identify a cafe that stays true to French culture in a sea of "tourist traps".

Café Cambronne is one kind of restaurant that has managed to camouflage itself very well: the furnishings are not ostentatious like all other restaurants are (dark green walls, anyone?) but the meals are priced well and the atmosphere, quaint.

`Treasure Hunt' Your Way Around Paris

No one's too old, nor too young, for a treasure hunt!

Walking (or for some, taking the Velib) is still the most common and cost-effective way to discover Paris, but this time around, take the road less traveled and treasure-hunt your way around it, instead. Clues, riddles, and tons of walking comprise the treasure hunt trip around Paris designed by themed-trips-extraordinaire, Ma Langue Au Chat.

The mechanics of the hunt are simple: just follow the clues that will be provided to you and make your way to the final meeting place. Your journey in between may consist of talking to a meeting a few people (who are in on the hunt) and working your way through narrow paths and hidden gardens. The hunt often takes place in Paris' liveliest districts: Marais, Montmartre, around Champs de Mars (near the Eiffel Tower), Saint Germain des Pres, and sometimes in Belleville.

The treasure hunts organized by Ma Langue Au Chat allows you to experience Paris up close, socialize with the natives and discover sights in Paris that are off the beaten path. If you want, you can also participate in a treasure hunt tailored according to your preferred level of difficulty or environment, but make sure to advise the team behind Ma Langue Au Chat ahead of time. They'll even let you decide on the theme of the treasure hunt and players you can work with: you can go at it alone, work with a friend, or pair up with another tourist you have never met before.
