Welcome 2 France Newsletter August 2013
Hello !

No other capital is as well-designed as Paris. If you zoomed in on the city from the sky, its unusual form would stand out: a snail's shell, divided into 20 arrondissements, spiraling outward. Odd but ingenious, the city's layout makes navigation by train, by car, or on foot, much easier. Whether the city was designed with tourists in mind is debatable, but one thing is certain, a layout such as this is perfect for a metropolis with so many picturesque angles and landmarks to showcase.

Planning a Majestic City

We owe Paris' timeless layout to Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, who, under the commission of Napoleon III, turned Paris from a medieval town into the majestic capital it is today.

It's funny how the city we call the "Birthplace of Fashion" today was, ironically, one of Europe's most unfashionable capitals. In the 19th century, while all other European capitals were boasting tall towers and wide thoroughfares, Paris was still lounging around in old, medieval fortresses. Cramped, narrow streets, congested sewers, and outdated buildings were the norm-- a look so different from the tourist hotspot it is, today. It definitely needed a makeover-- and a makeover did it get in 1859!

Known as one of the most meticulous and ambitious urban planning projects in centuries, the Hausmann renovations of Paris turned the medieval town into a modernized city, putting its well-planned highways and alleys, grand avenues, scenic parks, and intricately-designed commercial and residential buildings under the spotlight. The renovations began as a plan to modernize a city that had been marred by cholera outbreaks, traffic accidents that could have been avoided, and over-congested sewers, but it was also carried out to boost the city's reputation after the revolution.

So, how much did Paris' makeover cost? A whopping 2.5 billion francs!

If you're curious about how Paris might have looked prior to the renovations, you can still see a bit of old Paris when you walk through Le Marais. In fact, there are still medieval-era structures in this area: just keep your eye out for homes with tall dormers, cross-shaped windows, and buildings with Gothic or early Renaissance features, like the Hôtel de Sens where you can find Bibliothèque Forney, an art library.

Perfect Backdrops for Your Photo-Op

Where are the most picturesque locations in the city? This interactive infographic created by Eric Fischer on Flickr details the most frequented landmarks and hot spots in Paris. If you look closer, you can find red and blue lines: the former indicates places often visited by locals while the latter indicates high-tourist areas. Lines in yellow are places frequented by both natives and tourists.

So, where do Parisiens go to unwind? According to the map, they head to the city's parks, like the stunning Lac Daumensil, an artificial lake surrounded by a beautiful park where you can relax, away from the crowds, or in the stunning chateaus that surround Paris.

Chateau Saint-Germain-en-Laye in Yvelines, 19 km west of Paris
Visit Musee d'Archeologie Nationale housed within the chateau or the medieval-era forest that surrounds Yvelines.
Chateau de Maisons-Laffitte located Northwest of Paris, in Yvelines
The Chateau's facade is one of the last remaining and preserved examples of French Baroque architecture. Stroll around the nearby garden or come for the wine.
Chateau de Sceaux in Sceaux, Haute-de-Seine
Aside from the chateau, Sceaux is known for its aptly named gardens, Parc Sceaux, designed by Andre Le Notre. You can also find Musee de l'Ile-de-France, a national museum that houses all things relating to Paris, within the chateau.
Parc de Saint Cloud in Domaine National de Saint-Cloud
Visit the 460-hectare park which has long been hailed as one of Europe's most beautiful, or join Rock en Seine this 23, 24, 25 August 2013 held here.

Discovering Paris through an Interactive Game

There are many ways to discovering Paris, like through an interactive quest around town.

In our previous newsletter, we reviewed a unique tour that allows you to discover Paris with a treasure hunt. Aside from Ma Langue Au Chat, you can also discover Paris through an interactive game designed by Paris Hors Piste.

The two-woman team behind Paris Hors Piste have turned Paris into life-sized game boards for plenty of adventurers and treasure hunting enthusiasts.

Their outdoor activities include: "Mission : Impossible", an action-packed game that involves you saving a hostage (a participant and not a real hostage!) and defusing a bomb, "Hors Piste Cinema", where you get to be a French superstar for a day, "Hors Piste Enigmas", where you attempt to solve the mysteries of Montmartre, and "GPS Treasure hunt", where you solve enigmas around the city aided only by a GPS.
