Welcome 2 France Newsletter October 2013
Hello !

The cold breeze has finally arrived in Paris, but no drop in temperature can take the life away from this bustling capital. Low season, as many call it, is when tourist traffic (and air fare rates!) is at its lowest, but in a mystifying destination such as Paris, there is nothing low or slow. In fact, most of the fun begins at the latter part of the year.

Featured Apartments

Notre Dame - Colbert Suite

Located along a quiet street in rue Colbert, this 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom jewel boasts elegant furniture that reminds you of Paris in the early 20th century. Tall windows, a queen-sized bed, and all the amenities that make for a convenient stay complete the interior of our 50 sq. m. Colbert suite. The apartment's other plus side is its proximity to many of Paris' most loved parks and cafes.

Louvre - Saint Honoré Vendome II

It may be smaller than the usual 1-bedroom apartment in the heart of Paris, but what it lacks in intricate furnishing, it makes up for with its amenities, quiet neighborhood and distance to Musee du Louvre and plenty of other museums in the first district. For first time visitors who want to be where the action is, our 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment may be the perfect pick for you and 2 other people.

Champs Elysees - Foch II - 3 bedroom

A 3-bedroom, 2-bathrooom jewel in Champs Elysees, this 352 sq. m. apartment boasts a view of the majestic Arc de Triomphe from one of its windows, daily maid service and all the furnishings one can find in a modern luxury home. This high-end apartment is found in one of the best neighborhoods in Champs Elysees.

Champs Elysées - Paul Baudry II

Red and white hues dominate the interior of our lovely 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom pied-a-terre in Champs Elysees. With 130 sq. m. of floor space, stunning décor and complete amenities, your long-term stay in Paris is bound to get magical. To rent this apartment, there is a 1-year minimum stay requirement.

Where to Get Your Halloween Fix

Unfortunately, you won't get candy from your Parisian neighbors this year, but here's another way to celebrate the scary season.

Halloween is not as widely celebrated in Paris as it is in the United States, but don't let the lack of ghosts and ghouls on the door of your nearest pub discourage you from celebrating this holiday. In Paris, there are plenty of ghoul-themed destinations that seem to celebrate Samhain (where Halloween is based) all year round.

You might have heard of the Catacombs and the spirits (and sadly, the ghastly human odor) that haunt Père Lachaise Cemetery, but aside from these two, you can also get your Halloween fix at these addresses:

Party in a dungeon decked out with medieval-era torture devices and other non-conventional effects at Caveau des Oubliettes, 75005. Jazz is the music choice in this (literally) underground, but well-known, music club with jam sessions scheduled with Paris' best jazz makers every night. The dungeon opens every night at 5 PM and closes at 2 AM, the next morning.

Caveau des Oubliettes
52 rue Galande
75005, Paris

For example, if you are looking to dress up as a plague doctor from 15th century or a nobleman from the Baroque era, you could get your hands on an authentic costume from Theatr'Hall, a vintage and second-hand souvenir shop in the 6th district. You can also find fancy gowns, tuxes, suits, and everything else from Theatr'Hall in 3 Carrefour de l'Odeon, 75006, Paris.

You're all dressed up and ready to party, but where do you go? Traditionally, Halloween is not a major holiday in Paris, but pubs frequented by expats still celebrate the scary season sans candy and Jack-O-Lanterns.

Moose, a Canadian-owned bar in Paris, and the Violon Dingue in the 5th district, are two of many restobars in the city that stay true to Western tradition of celebrating Halloween. Costumes may not be necessary for the Halloween party here, but don't hesitate to pop in with your best vampire impersonation if you want to. The Moose is open from Mondays through Thursdays at 4PM to 2AM, Fridays at 11:30 AM to 2AM, and over the weekends, at 11AM to 2AM while the Violin Dingue is open from 7PM to 5AM daily.

Dining with Cats

It's a rare mix-cats and coffee, but for Café des Chats manager, Margaux Gandelon, these make a therapeutic pair.

The Café des Chats is a small, newly-opened café in the Marais District where coffee and other homemade brews are served and where the ambiance is people- and cat-friendly. The café is home to 12 rescued cats that freely roam the café floor and may even, from time to time, climb onto patrons' laps. It's a haven for cats, cat lovers, and coffee enthusiasts.

Ms. Gandelon is a strong supporter of "purr-therapy" which many cat lovers have said is capable of lowering blood pressure, arthritis, rheumatism, heart rates, and even depression. A cat's purr, believe it or not, is actually how the cat de-stresses itself, and the de-stressing power of a purr can also rub off on humans. What's good for the cat is probably good for the owner, I guess.

Like in most posh cafes in Paris, Cafés des Chats has its own house rules. For example, patrons cannot wake up sleeping cats, share your meal with them, or even, lift a cat when it is calmly seated on the ground. If, and only if, the cat jumps on your lap will you get the chance to pat one. In Cafés des Chats, it's cat territory.

The café is booked until the end of November, so if you want to spend the upcoming Christmas Holidays differently, why not spend it with the cats at:

The Magical Experience Begins

The magic in Paris begins this season as we anticipate the Christmas Holidays.

The best time to come for shopping and leisure is during Christmastime. The holidays mark the end of low season in Paris so expect prices to rise a bit, but the ambiance and citywide events are all worth it.

Location of Christmas Markets in Paris

Christmas markets are a staple in Paris during the holidays. It's easy to find these flea-market style shops in the city: just head down to the biggest monument in the district and there should be a market there. Here are some of the best, and less crowded, markets for you to visit, if you haven't already:

La Défense
Near Parvis de la Défense, Grand Arche
The look and feel of the Christmas market here is a far cry from the tall, futuristic buildings in La Defense, but it is an exciting sight to behold nonetheless.

Tour Montparnasse
The Christmas market, located near Tour Montparnasse, is where vendors from other provinces around Paris gather and sell regional delicacies.

Place d'Italie
Located in the underrated 13th district, the Christmas market is located right in front of Centre Commercial Italie 2. It's a smaller market but a sight to behold nonetheless.

Place des Abbesses
This market is hidden from plain view so you may need to venture into the Montmartre neighborhood in the 18th district to find it.

Gare de l'Est
The Gare de l'Est market is hard to miss and it might look like all the other Christmas markets but the fancy things sold here will include food, wine, and other delicious treats from the Alsatian region.

Place de la Nation
If you're looking for souvenirs from other countries, not just from within France, this market is frequented by sellers from other cultures.
