Welcome 2 France Newsletter July 2014
Hello !

Any city where art and philosophy can run riot is often a place where remarkable inventions also originate. Paris, once called the art capital of Europe, is such a place. How so many inventions can be discovered in one area is a curious thing; perhaps Paris' environment makes it the perfect location to find that much needed inspiration to create something new, something beautiful. Before summer ends, find your inspiration here in the City of Light.

Featured Apartments

Montmartre - Chappe Mansion

A stunning Parisian mansion for up to 8 people, the 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom Chappe Mansion is located in a private and quiet corner of Montmartre. Aside from its luxurious interior, this beautiful French mansion also features bright, tall windows, skylights, an elevator, a terrace, air-conditioning, and a cozy, private garden.

Champs Elysées - Ponthieu

A chic studio in one of Paris' liveliest address, the Champs Elysées - Ponthieu is perfect for up to 4 guests who want to explore Paris' nightlife. The interior of the apartment is as loud as its address: modern decor of solid orange and red hues dominate the walls and features all the modern conveniences of home.

A City for Inventors

Paris is a genius' Eden, a place where remarkable breakthroughs in science and art were conceptualized and realized. and offered to the rest of the world.

Plenty of scientific, musical, artistic, and political breakthroughs were discovered here, in the cobbled streets and lush gardens of Paris. You could say that the Hausmann buildings that stand proudly in each of the city's 20 arrondissements have stood witness to the discovery of at least one invention. For example, a number of cinematic implements such as the motion picture camera and chronophotography were created by Parisian scientists and cinematographers. The stethoscope, which has saved countless of lives since its inception, was invented by French doctor, René Laennec. Even the internal combustion engine, which led to the creation of modern machinery, was designed by Alphonse Beau de Rochas and Étienne Lenoir.

An intellectual environment permeates in Paris and its moniker, "the City of Light" figuratively and literally describes the city's history. The nickname stemmed from the gas lamps that used to keep the Arc de Triomphe illuminated at night and from the city's affinity for philosophy and the arts. The universities and educational establishments that line the Latin Quarter are proof of this relationship.

From right to left: The Foucault pendulum in the Paris Observatory, the first gas lamp lightning in Paris situated in Place du Carrousel (1818), and one of the remaining Universities de Paris (now Sorbonne) complexes.

Anyone who visits Paris either for leisure or business is always invited to make use of the city's erudite ambiance, find inspiration in it, and create something new. As you walk through the parks or visit the city's most beloved landmarks, let the experience inspire you to come up with something-- be it simple or scientific. There are approximately 400 gardens in and around Paris and each one is more than ready to trigger your genius. A brief poem, a story of your experience, or a painting would suffice as your contribution to Paris' reputation as a creator's wonderland.

Find Your Muse

Les Deux Magots in 6 Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, 75006, and Café de Flore in 172 Blvd Saint-Germain, 75006 are two special places in the hearts of writers everywhere: Hemingway, Sartre, and Beauvoir would gather here with other creative personalities and talk about their work, or just about anything under the sun. You could try and find your muse here with an al fresco meal.

Le Lumière is yet another cafe which is significant to cinematographers; it was where the very first motion picture was shown by brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière on 28 December, 1895, back when the cafe was still called Salon Indien du Grand Café. A hotel now sits in this spot but a cafe was opened and named after the inventors of the motion picture film.

For budding scientists and astronomers, the Paris Observatory is not only an ideal stop-over during your trip, it is also a noteworthy place where you can learn more about the solar system. It is also here in the Paris Observatory where you can find Léon Foucault's eponymous pendulum, the first of its kind and invented in February 1851.

The Celebration Continues

Three major events in the city mean three more reasons to celebrate and unwind with friends and family in Paris.

Bastille Day was that dramatic storming of the Bastille prison which later led to the French revolution; and although the actual Bastille Day occurred 225 years ago, the celebration never really ended. This 14 July, take part in what Parisians consider a pivotal point in their nation's history. Like the 4th of July in the United States, Bastille Day is celebrated with a military parade, various demonstrations along Champs Elysees, televised speeches, and a fireworks display by nightfall.

On Bastille Day, secure a spot for yourself near Tour Eiffel (Champs de Mars, preferably) or Montmartre to get a front row view of the pyrotechnic exhibition.

Nationwide Celebration

There are no beaches in Paris-- not naturally, anyway-- but to answer the popular demand for sand, an artificial beach is constructed every year by the banks of the Seine. The Paris Plages (literally, Paris Beach) is a month-long event where non-busy paths along the Seine are covered with sand and adorned with beach umbrellas, beach balls, and sand castles. Natives and tourists are welcome to soak up the sun here.

The Seine

The French love their film fests just as much as they love their films. After all, most cinematic breakthroughs (see above) in the past century were discovered in France. For a month starting on 23 July 2014, a film fest will be held at the Parc de la Villette, 75019 and will feature indie as well as mainstream films from all over the globe. The park will be transformed into an al fresco cinema complete with recliner seats and ample space for nighttime picnics.

Find Your Fruity Paradise

Tropical fruit would complete your summer meals, but alas, fruits are hard to find (and rather expensive) in Paris this season. Fortunately, there is a cozy restaurant in Paris where you can enjoy a plate of various healthy delights.

Le Paradis du Fruit is not just a fruit-themed restaurant although fruit juices and salads comprise a great part of the menu. Aside from salads, juices, yogurt, and fruit shakes, Paradis du Fruit also serves mojitos, seafood (such as steamed cod fish), and meat grilled platter, among other dishes. The healthy food chain (there are more than four branches in Paris) is no fast food diner, and would make a better alternative to any "McMeal".
