Welcome 2 France Newsletter August 2014
Hello !

The best temperatures of two seasons, summer and fall, often occur on the first few weeks of August, where it is neither too hot nor too cold, neither too dry nor wet. August in Paris is marked by sunny mornings and cool afternoons. For Parisien natives, August weather is perfect for al fresco meals, deep conversations, and for exploring one's artistic side. Explore yours this season over a philosophical cafe experience, among friends at a saloon, or over some artisan coffee.

Marais - Charlemagne G04531

Introducing: a stunning 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment situated on the 3rd floor of a Hausmann building in the ever-fashionable Marais district. This property comes complete with a queen-sized bed, 2 single beds, a fully-equipped kitchen, high-speed WiFi and all the modern conveniences of home despite being located in an area known for 'historical' buildings.

A Philosopher's Paradise
In the stunning streets of Marais, there exists a cozy cafe where Parisian philosophers and thinkers gather regularly... to discuss almost anything and everything under the sun.

Long before Paris became synonymous with fashion and opulence, a mere mention of the city's name reminded people of self-awareness and enlightenment. In the 17th century, one of the largest philosophical movements that revived the rest of Europe from a long era marred by obsolete traditions found its first few loyal supporters here, along the Latin Quarter. French scholars and philosophers like Voltaire, in particular, shared philosophical ideas along old Paris' cobbled streets; these exchanges would later inspire the Age of Enlightenment of which the 18th century is known for.

One can still find remnants of those exciting philosophical discussions all over Paris: on the intricate facade of Hausmann buildings, in the architectural designs that adorn the city's landmarks, and even in the quintessence of Parisian mannerisms and fashion.

Or if you would be interested in taking part in these philosophical exchanges like how scholars from all over Europe did centuries ago, take note of this address: the Marais.

Le Marais is often described as a fashionable area where hipsters and avid Instagram users converge to snap away at their quaintly prepared Parisian meals, but it is also the perfect place for people who simply love to think. If Marais were a breathing, living human being, its fashion boutiques would be its body, the quaint patisseries its palate, and Cafe des Phares would be its soul.

Café des Phares cooks up a different theme: while the restaurant serves comfort Parisian meals, one can also partake in a philosophical dicussion here every Wednesday night, along with other modern philosophers. In other words, every plate of croque your order comes with a slice of Socratic reasoning.

While cafes may be the most unusual places to talk about philosophy, the Café philosophique movement, as it is often referred to, revived the aged practice of common folk coming together to discuss topics within and outside France. Today, there are hundreds, if not thousands of cafés-philo established all over France, as well as in the UK, North America, and the rest of Europe.

A French philosopher, professor, and later, business owner, devised the concept behind Café Philosophique. Marc Sautet hoped to revive the ancient practice of learning more about life at the nearby agora. Sautet's model is similar: scholars meet at Café des Phares and one moderator, who may also be a student, picks the topic and officiates the discussion.

Upon Sautet's death, over 150 cafés-philos scattered throughout Europe and the world have been established.

For your very own slice of philosophy, visit Café des Phares whenever you find yourself strolling through Le Marais. Philosophical discussions occur every Wednesday night; everyone is encouraged to attend.

Paris During 'Belle Epoque'
The phrase "Belle Epoque" which translates to "The Beautiful Years" succinctly describes life in Paris from the 1870s until 1914.

For close to 40 years, Paris became the center for global trade, education, the arts, fashion, and music in Europe. The most beautiful years in Frence were aptly referred to as the "Belle Epoque". It was also during this time when grand infrastructures such as the Petit Palais were built as a testament to France's cultural and artistic offerings.

To commemmorate this exciting, enlightening era, an exhibit highlighting several works of art will be held at the Petit Palais until the 17th. To participate, make sure to secure your tickets before making your way to the exhibit.

The "Paris 1900: The City of Entertainment" exhibit also coincides with the 120th birthday of the Old Gray Lady, or the Eiffel Tower, as she is popularly known. The celebration titled "Gustave Eiffel, magicien du fer" is currently ongoing and will end by the 31st of August. If you seek a free alternative to the Belle Epoque exhibit, make your way Hôtel de Ville at 75004 to view never-seen before images of the construction of the Eiffel Tower... and of New York's Statue of Liberty. In case you didn't know, Gustave Eiffel co-designed Lady Liberty too!

Conversations Over Coffee
Although wine may be the beverage of choice among Parisians, cafes and restaurants across the city have cemented their name in making delicious, aromatic brewed coffee.

Everyone knowns that the perfect match to a gloomy August afternoon is an artistically prepared cup of joe. If you come from a coffee-country (that is, a country that prefers coffee over any other beverage), you'd be surprised to see how French baristas, especially those from artisan cofee shops, prepare their blends. Art is pretty much everywhere in Paris, even in coffee houses as baristas marry concoctions into a cup. For your visit, we recommend:

L'Arbre à Café, along 10 rue du Nil, 75002

Small, cozy, and specialized-- these three words pretty much describe the cafe and its serving area. The cafe owner is a master at mixing having previously worked in the wine industry, so one may expect appealing roasts from this boutique cafe.

Café Craft, at 24 Rue des Vinaigriers, 75010

Cafe Craft was designed for people who find it difficult to work without coffee on hand. Unlike other Parisian cafes, the cafe boasts tables that double as working tables and WiFi. Aside from coffee, Craft serves a comfortable work area, too.

Café Coutume, at 47 rue de Babylone, 75007

One of Paris' more popular artisan coffee shops, Cafe Coutume is run by two coffee enthusiasts, Antoine and Tom. There are three Coutume branches in Paris plus a branch in Japan. If you seek high-end roasts, Cafe Coutume is your best bet.
