Welcome 2 France Newsletter October 2017
Hello !

If you are regular reader of our newsletter you'll know that in October we always find something macabre or dark to talk about in honor of Halloween. And if you're a new reader, you might be expecting something along those lines. Well, we will of course provide, but we also want to talk about some of the great cultural events

Nuit Blanche

Don't speak French? Don't panic, it means White Night. OK, so the nights are not exactly white in October but the name is inspired by a Russian event on the same name. In St Petersburg, in the middle of summer when the sun doesn't set, music, art and cultural events throughout the city keep everyone entertained, through the night.... literally. As you can imagine the Paris version puts up some stiff competition and what's even better, many of the events on this night are completely free.

It takes place on Saturday the 7th of October and if you are in Paris this weekend, it simply can't be missed. It's been going strong since 2002 and become so popular that it has started in other cities across France. A fantastic way to really see the cultural life of the city. The night boasts both national and international acts like musicians and actors. So grab a coffee and a warm scarf (you can never be too careful around October) and enjoy the sights.

Slight downside, the organizers didn't feel the need to make an English version of their website - so Google translate at the ready! We spent a couple of hours trawling through the site to find you some interesting things. At the intersection of cinema, dance and the visual arts is The Master's Tool. A unique experience which is right on the pulse of contemporary Parisian culture, exactly what you came to Paris for, right? It's on Rue Cugnot, 75018.

OPERA GARNIER

"But I don't like opera and I can't afford it" - I can hear you shout. Well, maybe you are a fan or maybe you're not but this place is incredible. The opera on offer in this location is some of the best in the world. But if you don't have a ticket, then you can't get in. Until now. On selected dates during the month of October, the Opera Garnier will be available to visit as a guest.

This opera house has one of the most stunning interiors in the world. An exquisite example of Neobaroque architecture, with gilded balconies and bronze statues. But the very best part about this, is the number of tickets on offer during each 1.5 hour slot. Guaranteed crowd-less, you will feel like you have the whole building to yourself.

Pari Roller

There are many ways to get around in Paris. The subway is probably the quickest but you don't see all the sights. Walking is great and it's healthy. You could take a taxi everywhere, but that's going to be quite expensive. Or, you could rollerblade around the city! Bizarre, you think? Don't worry you'll be with thousands of locals all going in the same direction.

Think of the Pari Roller as a marathon.. just a marathon on rollerblades. Zoom past attractions like the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysées, Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, Moulin Rouge and more. And while there are so many old things in Paris - this event is brand new. Yes, this is the first ever one, taking place on October 15th. It helps if you are a bit agile on wheels.

Halloween

We just couldn't complete an October newsletter without even acknowledging one of the biggest holidays there is. Carving pumpkins and trick or treating is not exactly French but that doesn't mean you can't get into the spirit. Here are our two top suggestions which should hopefully help you and give you the chills at the same time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cimetière du Père Lachaise

The worlds first garden graveyard and arguably the most famous. The enormous graveyard houses some of the most famous names in history including Oscar Wilde and Molière. The first thing you will notice is the architecture. The tombs are so impressive It's completely free and open every day of the year and apart from the famous graves, you can easily find yourself alone and get some quiet time..... among the dead!

Dark Paris

Ooh la la. The first and original dark tour of Paris, this tour is amazing. Learn a different side to the history of Paris as you explore the streets and hear some interesting yet disturbing tales. A truly unique experience, the tours start at 9pm and last about 90 minutes and, of course, are always in English.
