NEIGHBORHOOD
The Marais, (The Marsh), was the height of fashion in the 17th century. The salons of important intellectuals thrived here in magnificent private hotels built for them by the leading architects of the day. But then the royal court packed off to Versailles and the area fell from fashion. Luckily, the entire quarter was considered not worth bothering about for a couple of hundred years. In the mid-sixties, it was declared the first historic preservation district in Paris when it was rediscovered in its almost pre-Revolutionary state. Mansions were converted to museums and soon galleries and boutiques followed. Bars, restaurants and hip tea salons joined the rush. Real estate prices soared. Today, the Marais is the largest historic district in all France, but it is also up-to-the-minute fascinating.
3 street markets nearby are open daily as well as 2 weekly open-air fresh food markets within walking distance of the apartment make cooking a joy! Centrally-situated: only a 5 minute walk either south to the historic Ile St. Louis, north to the Picasso Museum, west to Beaubourg/Les Halles or east to the beautiful, historic Place des Vosges. The apartment is very conveniently located by the Pompidou Museum. Most of historic Paris is within a 20 minute radius on foot.
