The Marais is long touted as Paris' trendy area for locals and tourists in the know - inndie boutiques, stylish cafes, restaurants and bars are just under your nose if you know where to look. It is also a lovely long stroll to the classical heart of Paris, in the 1st arrondissement and Rue Rivoli.
The Marais is home to Centre Georges Pompidou (unmistakable with its quirky exterior), Place de l´hôtel de Ville (the grand City Hall building), Place des Vosges and Picasso Museum.
A walk through the neighbourhood also allows you to admire many mansions of the seventeenth century, formerly occupied by the nobility. There is also the House of Nicolas Flamel, built in 1407, which might be the oldest house in Paris.
